Urinary
stone is a common problem. The usual manifestations
are severe lion pain radiating to groin, vomiting,dysuria
and haematuria. Urine analysis will reveal plenty
of RBC. Ultrasonogram is useful. There is a great
revolution in the treatment of stones over the
last 10 years. Painful surgeries, lengthy wounds
are now replaced by painless, wound les and blood
less modern treatment. The common treatment modalities
are:

ESWL (Extra Corporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy).
This is useful for Rental stone. This is painless
and requires no anaesthesia. Hence it is safe
for Diabetics, Asthmatics and Cardiac patients.
Patient lies on a X- Ray table and the shock waves
are focused on the stone. The stone gets fragmented
into fine power which is passed in the urine.
No admission in needed.
2.
URETEROSCOPE AND LITHOTRIPSY : This is used for
stones in ureter. Here a thin (3 mm diameter)
and long telescope is passed into the ureter and
the stone visualized. Using laser probes, stones
are fragmated. It is also painless & patient
can go home in one or two days.
3.
LAPAROSCOPY : This is useful for large stones
in the kidney and ureter. Two or three small holes
are made in the back and the stone can be removed
intact (without breaking). There is no pain and
no big wounds and the patient can go home in 2
to 3 days. It has the unique advantage that even
large stone can be completely cleared without
surgery in a single session treatment.
